Land of a Thousand Dances (UK)

Dir: Jordan Baseman
TICKET PROGRAM: 1-23-A

Dancing is free and freeing. The smallest movement can be understood as dancing. In an increasingly fragmented and isolating world, dance (as participants and/or as spectators) provides us with important fundamentally shared experiences that make us aware of our essential humanity, our connectedness, our community, ourselves.

Instead of creating a position of nostalgia or sentimentality, Land of a Thousand Dances is a political call, a rallying cry to gather and dance, celebrating the past in the present, to encourage a future, dispelling the divisiveness that presently permeates our culture. Linda Cartledge has danced in the city of Derby in the United Kingdom from the 1960s to the present day.

Although the spaces that Linda used to dance in have all been destroyed, she continues to dance daily, regardless. Land of a Thousand Dances features Linda’s recollections of dancing, set against abstract images that were recorded on 16mm film at an illegal rave.

B. F. Skinner Plays Himself

Dir: Theodore Kennedy
TICKET PROGRAM: 1-23-B-Skinner

This film revisits the life and works of B. F. Skinner through neverbefore-seen footage recovered from a failed educational film project.

Skinner–a world famous public intellectual in his lifetime who continues to be ranked among the most important psychologists of any era–is now largely forgotten outside a select academic niche.

From Skinner’s early work with rats, pigeon-guided bombs, and airconditioned baby cribs, to Utopian communes and debating Dennis Hopper, B. F. Skinner Plays Himself deconstructs the scientist and the prescience of his warnings about the power of shaping behavior. The failure of the educational film shows that changing behavior, whether for utopian or authoritarian purposes, is both more nuanced and more difficult than his proponents or critics imagined.
